Iranian lawmaker says Obama proposed talks (AP)

TEHRAN, Iran ? A conservative Iranian lawmaker says President Barack Obama has called for direct talks with Tehran in a secret letter sent to the Islamic Republic's supreme leader.

The semiofficial Fars news agency also quotes lawmaker Ali Motahari on Wednesday as saying the letter also warned that closing the Strait of Hormuz is a "red line" for Washington.

Iran's threat to block the strategic waterway, the route for about one-sixth of the global oil flow, is the latest flashpoint between the two countries that have long been at odds over Tehran's disputed nuclear program.

Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast said Iran is studying the correspondence and may reply if necessary.

The White House issued no immediate comment.
