In Israel, media stars are turning to politics

JERUSALEM (AP) ? They spent their journalistic careers analyzing, covering and skewering Israel's politicians. Now, a striking number are vying to join their ranks.

Four prominent Israeli TV anchors and news pundits are leaving their jobs and running for parliament in Israel's upcoming elections, reflecting the rising star power of media personalities for an electorate that has long had a penchant for retired army generals.

The recent surge of journalists-turned-politicians reflects in part a desire for new blood in a political scene long dominated by the same faces. Frequent corruption cases against figures in power in recent years only increase the appeal of those coming from outside the ranks of Israel's career politicians. The media stars seen nightly on TV or read daily in newspapers have the advantage of being both new and familiar.

For the first time, two significant political parties are entering the fray with well-known TV news celebrities at the helm. Elections are scheduled for Jan. 22.

Popular prime-time TV man Yair Lapid quit his job this year as weekend newsmagazine anchor on Channel 2 TV and formed his own political party, Yesh Atid, or "There is a Future."

And the center-left Labor Party is headed by former TV and radio commentator Shelly Yachimovich, who joined the media-to-politics wave several years ago and was elected party leader late last year.

More journalists are following the path in this election. This week, another high-profile commentator, Ofer Shelah, announced he was joining Lapid's party, and two other media figures said they would run for parliament on the Labor Party list.

Surveys are predicting that Labor and Yesh Atid, both appealing to centrist, middle-class voters, will have strong showings in the vote, albeit behind the leading, right-wing ticket of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman. Under Israel's system of proportional representation, the number of votes a party receives determines how many seats it controls in the 120-member parliament.

The newcomers join 11 former media figures in the outgoing parliament in parties spanning the spectrum from the liberal Meretz and centrist Kadima parties to the ultranationalist Yisrael Beitenu and Netanyahu's ruling Likud.

Notably, the number of former journalists in the outgoing parliament is the same as the number of former top security officials, a sign of how the media is beginning to rival a traditional main wellspring of Israel's political elite. Facing frequent wars, Israelis historically have liked having former military chiefs lead the country, and that sentiment still largely remains. But media personalities are loosening the generals' grip on the political helm, in part because they're even more well-known.

"They are known in every home. People like them," said Israeli media expert Yoram Peri. "Recognition has become very important."

The ex-journalists say they've jumped ship for politics for the same reason they went into the media world: a desire to have an impact on society.

"My entire adult life I have been a social activist and feminist, along with my journalistic work...I worked to right wrongs," Haaretz commentator Merav Michaeli, who hopes to represent Labor, wrote on her Facebook page. "Now I want to do that in the political domain, where things are decided and budgets are divided."

"I want to have an impact," said Nachman Shai, former Army Radio chief editor and television executive who served as a lawmaker in the Kadima party. "You can only have an impact where decisions are made." With Kadima sinking in the polls, Shai recently moved to the Labor Party in hopes of being re-elected.

But some are concerned about skewed news coverage when a journalist is mulling a political plunge.

One lawmaker petitioned the Israel Press Council this week to draft regulations to ensure that working journalists disclose their deliberations about running for office. "The conduct we are witnessing at this time seems to cross red lines," said Likud politician Yariv Levin.

In a televised debate on the issue, blogger and journalist Tal Schneider said the phenomenon shamed the profession by compromising its ethical bedrock, impartiality. "If journalists say they want to go into politics, what does it say about the years they worked (in the field) and how they worked?" she said.

Senior Israeli commentator Dan Margalit accused his colleagues of hypocrisy.

"Day after day, journalists and tycoons have prattled on and on about how Israel's best citizens stay away from entering politics," Margalit wrote in Israel Hayom, a free daily loyal to Netanyahu. "Many of those same jabberers now want to join the politicians they demonized daily."

Media and politics have been closely connected since the days of Israel's founding fathers, notes media expert Peri, director of the Gildenhorn Institute for Israeli Studies at the University of Maryland.

Theodor Herzl, the founder of modern political Zionism, came to champion the quest for a Jewish homeland after covering for a Viennese newspaper the 19th-century trial of French Jewish officer Alfred Dreyfus, sentenced for treason in a trial Herzl saw as anti-Semitic. Herzl's successor as head of the World Zionist Organization, Nahum Sokolov, was a journalist. Two of Israel's first political party leaders were newspapermen.

But for years, Israeli politics was heavily driven by parties, not the personalities who led them. Voters voted for parties with clear ideologies and long-time members. That changed in the 1990s: political parties weakened as voters began to favor individual candidates, many of whom had no political experience.

The phenomenon dovetailed with the introduction of commercial television in Israel in 1993, after a single state-run channel monopolized coverage for nearly three decades, Peri said. More programming on television meant more TV celebrities, and those celebrities began to be considered as attractive candidates for office.

Gadi Wolfsfeld, a professor of political communication at the Interdisciplinary Center in Herzliya, said Israeli journalists may have spent their careers covering politics, but it doesn't prepare them any better than a general or lawyer who enters politics.

"The best training for a politician is being a politician," Wolfsfeld said.

Government: Violent crimes rose 18 percent in 2011

(AP) ? The number of violent crimes rose by 18 percent in the United States last year while property crimes went up by 11 percent, the government reported Wednesday.

It was the first year-to-year increase for violent crime since 1993, marking the end of a long string of declines. Violent crime fell by 65 percent since 1993, from 16.8 million to 5.8 million last year.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics' annual national crime victimization survey, the size of the percentage increases in both violent crime and property crime for last year was driven in large part by the historically low levels seen in 2010.

The increase in violent crime was the result of an upward swing in assaults, which moved up by 22 percent, from 4 million in 2010 to 5 million last year. The increases in violent crime experienced by whites, Hispanics, younger people and men accounted for the majority of the increase in violent crime.

In the latest survey, property crime was up for the first time in a decade, from 15.4 million in 2010 to 17 million last year. Household burglaries rose 14 percent, from 3.2 million to 3.6 million. The number of thefts jumped by 10 percent, from 11.6 million to 12.8 million.

The victimization figures are based on surveys by the Census Bureau of a large sample of people in order to gather data from those who are victims of crime. They are considered the government's most comprehensive crime statistics because they count both crimes that never are reported to the police as well as those reported.

Last May, the FBI's preliminary crime report for 2011, which counts only crimes reported to police, concluded that crime dropped again last year, down 4 percent for violent crime and 3.7 percent for property crime. The declines slowed in the second half of last year, a sign to academic experts that the many years of lowering crime levels might be nearing an end. Historically, less than half of all crimes, including violent crimes, are reported to police.

First analysis of IASLC malignant pleural mesothelioma database

DENVER The International Mesothelioma Interest Group (IMIG) staging system has been widely used, however, widespread concerns exist about the validity of the current malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) staging system. Concerns include that the system is derived from analysis of small, retrospective surgical series; it can be difficult to apply to clinical staging; and uses descriptors for lymph node involvement, which may not be relevant to MPM. Therefore, in collaboration with IMIG, the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC) has decided to update the staging system for MPM by developing a large international database.

A study, published in the November 2012 issue of the IASLC'S Journal of Thoracic Oncology, reports the current staging system by and large appropriately distinguishes among T and N categories and overall stages but also highlights areas for potential revision.

The study looked at 3,101 patients from 15 centers in four continents. The current data still represents mainly surgically treated patients. The authors report that current T descriptors are qualitative and most applicable to pathological staging. Possibly in the future, volumetric tumor measurement could enhance the current T descriptors.

In addition, the data demonstrate a difference in survival for node-negative versus node-positive patients. The difference between N1 and N2 disease is less clear, suggesting that additional study of the extent of lymph node involvement might yield improvements in the N-classification factor.

And finally the authors suggest that staging groups, especially for stages I and II disease, need to be reassessed. In the future, they say, "the addition of a larger group of patients with more advanced disease, staged clinically and managed nonsurgically may help determine whether stages III and IV should be classified into a and b subcategories."

For Romney, another day, another donor event

LAS VEGAS (Reuters) - Under fire from fellow Republicans to be more visible in swing states to help his shaky campaign, Mitt Romney will have to pull himself away from a major drag on his time: fundraising events.

Presidential hopeful Romney's new strategy to sometimes hold three campaign events a day in the key states that will likely decide the November 6 election has yet to kick in.

Instead, on Friday he flew across the country to hold just one rally in Las Vegas, but also to attend a fundraiser with wealthy donors at the Red Rock Casino Resort and another one near San Francisco.

"President Obama says he can't fix Washington. I can. I will lead. I will get the job done," he told the Las Vegas audience of financial backers and casino bigwigs.

Among the supporters was Sheldon Adelson, the billionaire owner of The Venetian Resort. Romney teased him in his remarks. "I don't know how it is that Sheldon Adelson got in the front row," he quipped.

Romney needs to keep his donors sweet after President Barack Obama and his allies scored a financial victory in August over the Republicans.

Romney's "Super PAC" - Restore Our Future - plowed through $21.2 million as its fundraising declined for the second month, leaving it with just $6.3 million in cash on hand and raising questions about how much of an ad-buying force it will be in the home stretch.

Adelson and his wife gave $10 million to the Super PAC in June but it is not known whether he and Romney discussed further funding on Friday. The two men were photographed shaking hands after the Red Rock event.

Also in Nevada, Romney held a rally where he spoke for about 20 minutes to several thousand supporters at the campus of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

The Republican touched on proposals to help the still-struggling housing market. Nevada, a swing state where polls show a tight presidential race, was one of the epicenters of the housing bust that helped trigger the 2007-2009 U.S. recession.

Romney said the government should move aggressively to sell hundreds of thousands of foreclosed houses it has on its books.

HISTORIC MANSION

He then flew to his other donor event, at a historic mansion in Hillsborough, a wealthy community outside of San Francisco. Among those in attendance was George Shultz, U.S. Secretary of State under President Ronald Reagan.

Romney, who lags narrowly in national polls but by notable margins in battleground states such as Ohio, has mostly stayed away from big swing-state campaign events in the past week.

He has spent time raising money in California, a sure Democratic win in November, and Texas, which is safely Republican. He also visited Georgia and Utah, both Republican-leaning red states, for fundraisers.

"Romney doesn't seem to be out there campaigning enough," Peggy Noonan, former speechwriter for Reagan, wrote in The Wall Street Journal.

The former Massachusetts governor seems "always be disappearing into fundraisers and not having enough big public events."

The number of voters reached by retail campaigning - shaking hands at a state fair, or speaking at a rally - pales next to those that a campaign can appeal to through the kind of intensive television advertising that funds raised from wealthy donors can buy.

But at a time when most swing-state voters have seen hundreds of ads, a local event that might top the evening news is good publicity for a candidate that money cannot buy.

Romney has no public events planned for Saturday, which he will spend in Los Angeles and San Diego, where he has a home. On Sunday, he will hold an evening campaign rally in Denver.

Next week will see him spend more time in front of voters.

He goes on a bus tour of Ohio on Tuesday and Wednesday and will team up there with running mate Paul Ryan.

Apart from being a time sink, fundraisers also hold dangers for Romney. He was speaking candidly to donors at a luxury home in Boca Raton, Florida, in May when he made comments about Obama's supporters becoming reliant on federal aid. Those remarks made behind closed doors surfaced in a video this week and caused a firestorm of criticism.

Tongan wreck may be pirate treasure ship

Divers in Tonga have discovered a shipwreck believed to be a pirate vessel that folklore says sank in the 19th century with a hold full of treasure, officials in the Pacific nation said Thursday.

The Port-au-Prince, a British privateer, was attacked by local warriors in 1806 after arriving in Tonga and most of its crew were massacred on the orders of King Finau 'Ulukalala II, Tonga's tourism ministry said.

It said the Tongans salvaged iron and cannon from the ship, before the king ordered it to be scuttled with its treasure still on board.

The vessel was thought to be lost until a local diver in the Ha'apai group of islands last month found wreckage that has features similar to the historic privateer, tourism ministry spokeswoman Sandra Fifita said.

If the wreck proved to be the Port-au-Prince, the treasure was likely to still be intact, she added.

"It is believed that a considerable amount of copper, silver and gold is resting with the wreck, along with a number of silver candlesticks, incense pans, crucifixes and chalices," she said in a statement.

Fifita said the wreck had copper cladding on its hull, which Britain's National Maritime Museum in Greenwich said meant it dated from 1780 to 1850, when such cladding was used to protect against shipworm and marine weeds.

The statement said local divers were mapping the wreck for further study.

Resort owner Darren Rice, one of only two divers to have visited the site, said it was located on a reef just off the island of Ha'ano in an area renowned for its rough seas.

"There's very little left of the ship, it's been pounded by 4-5 metre (13-16.5 foot) swells for 200 years, so there's wreckage scattered all over the sea floor," he told AFP.

Rice was reluctant to reveal too much about the wreck's location, fearing an influx of treasure hunters.

"We want to make sure the area's properly mapped and everything that's found is photographed and documented," he said.

"If it's the Port-au-Prince then it's the most significant wreck in Tonga's history."

Asked if he believed there was a lost trove of pirate treasure on the sea floor, he replied: "If it's the Port-au-Prince, it's there.

"It will be well and truly buried by now and it'll take a lot of work to get to it."

Rice said conditions would be too rough for further dives until November or December and the first priority would be trying the verify that the Port-au-Prince's final resting place had been found.

"That's the most exciting thing to me, not the treasure," he said.

"Only one ship of that era has ever gone missing in Ha'apai, so if it's not the Port-au-Prince, what is it?"

The Port-au-Prince was originally built in France but was captured by the British and set sail from London in 1805 as a privateer, a ship with permission to attack and plunder the vessels and possessions of Britain's rivals Spain and France.

After almost two years at sea, during which it raided Madrid's settlements in Peru and plundered Spanish ships, it planned to hunt whales migrating through the Pacific and made its way to Tonga, where it met its end.

A teenaged boy named William Mariner was part of the crew and survived the massacre, eventually becoming a favourite of the king and adopting the name Toki Ukamea, or Iron Axe.

He stayed in Tonga for about four years before travelling back to Britain on a passing ship, recounting his adventures to amateur anthropologist John Martin in "An Account of the Natives of the Tonga Islands".

The book remains one of the main sources for historians studying pre-Christian Tonga.

London 2012 Olympics: Rise of medal-winning cycle star Lizzie Armitstead

Born in Otley, West Yorkshire, the 23-year-old took up cycling only when Team GB visited her school when she was a teenager.

Aged 15, Armitstead preferred sports like hockey, netball and football, but her PE teacher at Prince Henry's Grammar School is said to have spotted something in the teenager and invited British Cycling's Olympic Talent to come to the school.

"They set up fun and games on bikes on the school field and gave people a go," Armitstead said previously.

"They saw who they thought had potential and I was one of them," she said, but insisted: "I was rubbish. I was really bad."

Since then it has not been plain sailing, but Armitstead has enjoyed a relatively meteoric rise, although her own success seems to have come as a surprise to the now-silver medallist.

"My first race that I won, I was too scared to take my hands off the handlebars and celebrate," she is reported as saying. "I was just so shocked that I'd won."

It was clearly no lucky victory. Armitstead won a silver medal in the Scratch Race at the Junior World Track Championships in 2005, she was U23 European Scratch Race Champion in 2007 and 2008, and came second in the Points Race in 2007.

In 2008 she is said to have played a key role in helping fellow Briton Nicole Cooke win the World Championships road race in Varese, Italy, as Cooke became the first cyclist to take the World Championship and Olympic titles in the same year.

The following year, Armitstead was part of the Women's Team Pursuit which won gold at the World Track Championships in Warsaw, Poland, and at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi in 2010 she took silver in the road race, as well as bronze in the points race.

The 23-year-old has notched up other notable victories, including winning the first stage of Tour de l'Aude in May 2009, and winning the best young rider classification at the women's Tour of Italy.

In November that year she won the Track World Cup team pursuit in Manchester with Joanna Rowsell and Wendy Houvenaghel.

Cooke may have been the defending Olympic champion, but Armitstead was not afraid to voice her opinion.

In September 2011 she criticised Cooke for "riding for herself" after the World Championships road race in Copenhagen.

The pair appear to have made up since then - but Armitstead found herself up there as a big name going into this year's Games.

She announced she planned to focus on road racing at London 2012 late last year, and in June was confirmed in Team GB for her first Olympics.

Writing in a blog for London's Evening Standard, she said she was expecting the news, but was again taken aback by her own reaction.

"It felt like a big weight had been lifted off my shoulders but all along I wasn't aware it had been a weight on my shoulders, if that makes any sense."

And the weight will certainly be off her shoulders after winning Britain's first Olympic medal today.

And although she was slightly rueful at missing out on gold, she showed her usual buoyant self, saying: "I'm really, really happy. Maybe later I'll start thinking about that gold, but I'm happy with silver at the moment.

"It's something very special and it hasn't sunk in yet."

Report: US presents Israel with Iran strike plan

JERUSALEM (AP) ? An Israeli newspaper reported Sunday that the Obama administration's top security official has briefed Israel on U.S. plans for a possible attack on Iran, seeking to reassure it that Washington is prepared to act militarily should diplomacy and sanctions fail to pressure Tehran to abandon its nuclear enrichment program.

A senior Israeli official, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss confidential talks, said the article in the Haaretz daily was incorrect.

Haaretz said National Security Adviser Tom Donilon laid out the plans before Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during a dinner at a visit to Israel earlier this month. It cited an unidentified senior American official as the source of its report, which came out as presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney was telling Israel he would back an Israeli military strike against Iran.

The American official also said Donilon shared information on U.S. weapons that could be used for such an attack, and on the U.S. military's ability to reach Iranian nuclear facilities buried deep underground, the newspaper said. It cited another U.S. official involved in the talks with Israel as concluding that "the time for a military operation against Iran has not yet come."

The Israeli official, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss a confidential meeting, said, "Nothing in the article is correct. Donilon did not meet the prime minister for dinner, he did not meet him one-on-one, nor did he present operational plans to attack Iran." He had no information when asked if Donilon had discussed any kind of attack plans with any Israeli official. Haaretz said another Israeli official attended for part of the meeting.

The U.S. Embassy had no immediate comment. Haaretz cited Tommy Vietor, a spokesman for the U.S. National Security Council, as declining to comment on the confidential discussion between Netanyahu and Donilon. The White House also declined comment.

Both Israel and the U.S. think Iran's ultimate aim is to develop weapons technology, and not just produce energy and medical isotopes as Tehran claims. U.S. officials are concerned that Israel might attack Iranian nuclear facilities prematurely, and have been trying to convince Israeli leaders they can depend on Washington to keep Iran from becoming a nuclear power.

Israeli leaders have repeatedly said they would not contract out their country's security to another nation.

In Jerusalem on Sunday, a top Romney foreign policy adviser told reporters, "If Israel has to take action on its own, in order to stop Iran from developing the capability (to build a nuclear weapon), the governor would respect that decision." Romney also thinks the option of a U.S. attack should also be on the table.

(AP) ? NBC's Bob Costas noted a controversy over honoring Israeli athletes killed at the Olympics 40 years ago during his coverage of the opening ceremony but stopped short of offering his own protest.

The International Olympic Committee had declined a request to hold a moment of silence during the ceremony to acknowledge the 11 Israeli athletes and coaches killed by Palestinian gunmen in Munich in 1972. Costas called that decision insensitive during an interview this month and indicated he would call for his own moment of silence when Israeli athletes marched into the Olympic Stadium on Friday.

Costas' comments took his bosses by surprise. Jim Bell, executive producer of the NBC's telecast, said this week that Costas hadn't brought it up with him before the interview.

As the athletes marched in Friday, Costas said that IOC President Jacques Rogge led a moment of silence for the late Israelis this week before about 100 people at the Athlete's Village.

"Still, for many, tonight with the world watching is the true time and place to remember those who were lost and how and why they died," Costas said.

After a five-second pause, NBC cut to a commercial.

Abraham Foxman, national director of the Anti-Defamation League, which promotes Jewish causes, said he appreciated Costas bringing up the issue, though he didn't expect a moment of silence.

"He established a sense of history and decency and sensitivity, I would say, in the tradition of Jim McKay," Foxman said. The late McKay is the former ABC sportscaster who anchored coverage of the 1972 attack.

American nuns will meet in St Louis next week to consider their response to a Vatican report which questioned their doctrinal loyalty.

The New York Times reports that the assembly of nuns will decide how to act in wake of the scathing critique issued in the Spring.

President of the Leadership Conference Sister Pat Farrell told the paper that the Vatican seems to regard questioning as defiance, while the sisters see it as a form of faithfulness.

She said: ?We have a differing perspective on obedience. Our understanding is that we need to continue to respond to the signs of the times, and the new questions and issues that arise in the complexities of modern life are not something we see as a threat.?

The paper also quotes the former head of the church?s doctrinal office, Cardinal William J. Levada.

He met with the nuns? leaders in June, just before he retired, and said afterwards that they should regard his office?s harsh assessment as "an invitation to obedience."

At the time, Cardinal Levada said: ?I admire religious men and women. But if they aren?t people who believe and express the faith of the church, the doctrines of the church, then I think they?re misrepresenting who they are and who they ought to be.

The gathering of the nuns will decide whether or not to cooperate with the three bishops appointed by the Vatican to supervise the overhaul of their organization.

The Leadership Conference of Women Religious represents about 80 percent of women?s Catholic religious orders in the United States.

The report says that the Leadership Conference is: ?Considering at least six options that range from submitting graciously to the takeover to forming a new organization independent of Vatican control, as well other possible courses of action that lie between those poles."

Church scholars told the paper that the power struggle between the nuns and the Vatican has been "building for decades."

The report states that at issue are: ?Questions of obedience and autonomy, what it means to be a faithful Catholic and different understandings of the Second Vatican Council.?

In response, the nuns have claimed their loyalty to Vatican II.

Sister Janice Farnham, a retired professor of church history at the Boston College School of Theology and Ministry, said: ?We were the ones who probably took Vatican II and ran the fastest and the farthest with it.

?Sometimes our church leaders forget, we were tasked to do these things by the church. The church said jump, and we said, how high?

?The church said update, renew, go back to your sources, and we did it as best we could. We did it with a passion, and we paid dearly.?

Cancer, Injuries More Likely in People with Serious Mental Disorders

By Traci Pedersen Associate News Editor
Reviewed by John M. Grohol, Psy.D. on July 21, 2012

Cancer, Injuries More Likely in People with Serious Mental DisordersPeople suffering from schizophrenia, bipolar disorder or serious depression are 2.6 times more likely to develop cancer than people without a serious mental disorder, according to new Johns Hopkins research.

The findings generate questions about whether patients with severe mental illness are receiving cancer screenings and other types of preventative care.

?The increased risk is definitely there, but we?re not entirely sure why,? says study leader Gail L. Daumit, M.D., M.H.S., an associate professor of medicine and psychiatry at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

?Are these people getting screened? Are they being treated? Something?s going on.?

In another study, published online last month in the journal Injury Prevention, Daumit found that patients with serious mental disorders were almost twice as likely to end up in a hospital?s emergency room or inpatient department suffering from an injury than the general population and about 4.5 times more likely to die from these injuries.

Approximately five percent of Americans have a serious mental illness, says Daumit, and these individuals are known to be two to three times more likely to die prematurely than people without severe psychiatric problems.

A small proportion of the greater risk, she says, can be credited to the higher risks of suicide and homicide victimization in this group, but those factors are not responsible for most of the difference. The two highest causes of death are cardiovascular disease and cancer, the same top causes for those who are not mentally ill.

Daumit, a practicing internist, believes this population could be ?falling through the cracks.?

In the first study, the researchers analyzed data from 3,317 Maryland Medicaid recipients who had schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, and looked into whether the patients had developed cancer and, if so, what type of cancer they had.

They discovered that individuals with schizophrenia, when compared to the general population, were more than 4.5 times more likely to develop lung cancer, 3.5 times more likely to develop colorectal cancer and nearly three times more likely to develop breast cancer.

Those with bipolar disorder experienced similarly high risk for lung, colorectal and breast cancer. There were no racial differences in those who developed cancer in this group, whose average age was between 42 and 43 years.

Smoking could be the main reason for the elevated risk of lung cancer, says Daumit, which is more prevalent in people with serious mental disorders. She also speculates that the risk for breast cancer could be associated with the fact that women with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder are less likely to have children, and childbearing is believed to reduce breast cancer risk.

Furthermore, some psychotropic medications can raise levels of the hormone prolactin, a factor that has been associated with breast cancer. The colorectal cancer risk, she says, could be related to lifestyle issues, such as smoking, lack of physical activity and a diet lacking fruits and vegetables.

Daumit believes further research is needed on the role of behavioral and pharmacological factors in increased cancer risk among people with serious mental disorders, and whether this population receives appropriate cancer screening and treatment.

In the next study, Daumit?s team looked at similar Maryland Medicaid data from 1994 through 2001 in search of other patterns. They found that over the seven-year period, 43 percent of the 6,234 people with serious mental illness in the group were seen at a hospital emergency department.

Superficial injuries, open wounds and sprains were the most common types of injuries, with the least frequent being poisonings and burns. Daumit says the findings suggest that people with serious mental illness seem to be at greater risk for both intentional and unintentional injury, and the types of injuries were mostly associated with falls and minor violence.

People in this group are more likely to have substance abuse problems, and being under the influence of drugs or alcohol can increase injury risk, Daumit says.

Another factor that may be at play, she says, is low socioeconomic status, which is also associated with mental illness and injury risk stemming from unsafe housing and poorly maintained neighborhoods.

?Just as this population has other medical risks, injury requiring acute medical attention in the emergency department is common and we should consider this when we are looking at the overall care of the patient,? Daumit says.

The study is published in the journal Psychiatric Services.

Montenegro Boosts Ties to Azerbaijan :: Balkan Insight

Igor Luksic, the Montenegrin Prime Minister, started his first official visit to Azerbaijan on Monday.

After a meeting with President Ilhman Aliyev, he said that Montenegro was determined to expand economic relations with Azerbaijan.

Last week, a representative of the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic, SOCAR, signed an agreement for a 90-year lease of the former military barracks in Kumbor, on Montenegro?s coast, with Predrag Sekulic, Minister of Tourism.

The oil company promised to build a tourist resort at the site, investing more than 250 million euro over the next eight years.

The two officials on Monday welcomed the signing of this agreement and also talked about deepening co-operation in the field of energetics and trade.?

They also suggested opening direct or charter airplane connections between the two countries.?

In a recent interview with the daily newspaper Pobjeda, Eldar Hasanov, ambassador of Azerbaijan, said his country planned to invest in a number of social projects in the municipality of Herceg Novi and in the north.

Some Montenegrins, including Vanja Calovic, head of the NGO Network for Affirmation of Non-Governmental Sector, MANS, have criticized the moves. Calovic says that "instead of eliminating corruption in order to bring in serious investors, the government is focusing on firms from Azerbaijan." MANS has been one of the main organizers of frequent civic protests in Podgorica.

However, Dragoljub Jankovic, Dean of the Business School at the "Mediteran" university, said that fears that investors from certain countries are not ?clean" enough were unjustified.

?No matter from where they come, investors should be respected as far as their intentions do not interfere with politics," Jankovic added.

Fla. teen convicted in middle school beating case

(AP) ? A jury on Monday convicted a teenager of attempted murder in a vicious kicking and stomping attack on a girl outside a middle school in 2010, rejecting his claims of insanity.

The jury deliberated just over four hours before returning the guilty verdict in the trial of Wayne Treacy in the attack on then-15-year-old Josie Lou Ratley. Treacy, 17, could get up to 50 years in prison for the conviction of attempted first-degree murder with a deadly weapon ? the steel-toed boots he used to nearly crush the girl's skull.

The crux of the case was whether jurors would buy Treacy's defense that he was not responsible because he suffered from severe post-traumatic stress disorder resulting from his brother's suicide a few months before. The March 2010 attack happened after Ratley enraged Treacy by sending him a taunting text message about his dead brother.

Experts on both sides agreed Treacy has PTSD. But prosecution psychiatrists testified that Treacy clearly knew right from wrong and understood the consequences of his actions.

Treacy showed no emotion, staring straight ahead as the verdict was read. His mother and other family members avoided the media by ducking quickly out a side exit.

Prosecutor Maria Schneider said Ratley's mother, Hilda Gotay, told her "thank you" in a text message shortly after the verdict was announced.

"If there are any young people watching this, I hope they realize that because you are angry, because you are upset, because you have issues, it is never OK to take things like this in your own hands and to act in this way," Schneider said.

Ratley's family said in a news release that it was "not a day to rejoice."

"Thank you to the jury for having the courage to make the right decision," they said.

Circuit Judge David Haimes said he would schedule sentencing at a later date.

Defense attorney Russell Williams said there will be an appeal, focusing in part on a police interrogation video that largely was not permitted into evidence.

The video, Williams said, could shed more light on Treacy's troubled state of mind about two hours after the attack. Early in the video, Treacy calls himself a "monster" and says he could not remember committing the attack.

Williams also said the prison system isn't built to handle young, mentally ill people.

"It's unfortunate we have no place to put him. This is a terrible, terrible case," Williams told reporters.

It all began with a common activity for millions of teenagers: rapid-fire text messaging. They sent dozens of messages in less than an hour.

Ratley and Treacy exchanged vulgar and insulting texts before the one about the brother was sent, and Treacy threatened earlier in the messages to kill the girl. But when she told him to "go visit your dead brother," Treacy reacted in the strongest possible terms: "I swear to god I'm gonna kill you! I'll (expletive) find you! Your (expletive) is cold, dead meat (expletive)!"

Trial evidence showed that after receiving Ratley's text, Treacy either called or sent texts to several friends saying he was going to kill someone and would go to prison.

He wrote out a crude will. He put on steel-toed boots and black martial arts gloves, rode his bicycle to Deerfield Beach Middle School and had a friend point out Ratley, whom he had never met. Ratley earlier let that friend, Kayla Manson, use her cellphone to communicate with Treacy before the texts between the two of them started.

Dr. Hans Steiner, a Stanford University psychiatrist who testified for the prosecution, said Treacy's calls and texts clearly showed that he knew his planned actions were wrong and that there would be serious consequences.

"He's spelling out what he's going to do. He's spelling out that he is going to jail because of it. He knows he's going to go away. He knows this is not going to end well," Steiner testified.

Treacy chose not to take the stand in his own defense. Ratley, who suffered permanent brain injuries, also did not testify.

A defense psychiatrist, Dr. Alexander Neumeister, testified that Treacy was in a "dissociative state" after getting Ratley's text in which he had little mental control over his actions, especially once Manson pointed out Ratley in her red shirt at the school's bus loop.

"He saw something red and then he was on autopilot," Neumeister testified. "There is no way that he knew what he was doing."

Manson is charged as a juvenile with being an accessory to attempted first-degree murder and faces an August trial.

UAE: Operations begin at oil pipeline bypassing key strait that Iran has threatened to shut

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates - The United Arab Emirates on Sunday inaugurated a much-anticipated overland oil pipeline that bypasses the Strait of Hormuz, giving the OPEC member insurance against Iranian threats to block the strategic waterway.

The 380-kilometer (236-mile) Abu Dhabi Crude Oil Pipeline snakes across western desert dunes and over the craggy Hajar mountains to the city of Fujairah on the UAE's Indian Ocean coast, south of the strait.

Until now, all Emirati exports were loaded in the Gulf and then sailed out through Hormuz. Once it is running at full capacity, the pipeline could allow the country, OPEC's third biggest exporter, to ship as much as two-thirds of its peak production through the eastern port city.

It is designed to carry at least 1.5 million barrels a day of crude, though capacity is expected to eventually rise to 1.8 million barrels daily.

Efforts to bring the long-awaited export route online have gained increased urgency in recent months because of repeated threats by Iranian officials to close Hormuz if the country's own exports are blocked.

The narrow strait is patrolled by Iranian warships as well as by the U.S. Navy and its allies. It is the export route for about 17 million barrels of oil a day, or a fifth of the world's oil supply.

The chairman of Iran's Joint Chiefs of Staff said Sunday that Tehran has a contingency plan to close the key route, though any decision to shut it rests with the country's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Gen. Hasan Firouzabadi's comments come two weeks after the European Union enforced a total oil embargo against Iran. The move is part of a series of sanctions meant to force Tehran to halt its uranium enrichment program. The West suspects Iran is aiming to build nuclear weapons. Iran denies the charge.

Emirati officials quietly began filling the new pipeline with oil on June 30, according to the UAE embassy in Washington. A statement from the embassy said the project underscores the U.S. ally's "commitment to ensuring the reliable and safe delivery of crude oil ... to global markets."

Officials including the Emirates' energy minister gathered in Fujairah for the formal inauguration of the pipeline, said Mohammed Saif al-Afkham, the director general of Fujairah municipality.

The International Petroleum Investment Co., the state-run company behind the project, confirmed that the pipeline became operational with the first commercial shipment being loaded onto a tanker for export.

The U.S. ambassador to the UAE attended the inauguration, underscoring the project's strategic significance. Ambassador Michael H. Corbin called the launch "a historic step in establishing multiple routes for the vital flow of oil from the Arabian Peninsula."

Although several Gulf Arab oil and gas producers fear a shutdown of the strait could block exports, only the UAE and Oman have coastlines on the Indian Ocean side of the strait. Saudi Arabia also can avoid Hormuz by shipping its Gulf fields' oil output through ports on the Red Sea, but it would have to significantly improve its transport infrastructure to get its full production out.
